Why MVHRS improve the quality of your life?

Ventilation is necessary for better indoor air quality. Few modern house are capitalising on this straightforward solution to maximising comfort all year around, while old building were built without because of a lack of knowledge and desire to design and build to a good standard. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) is the ventilation option for the whole house system, balancing and controlling the environment. This ventilation system acts as an air-to-air heat exchanger recovering the already used heat of the house.

It works by pulling the air in and blowing air out with the help of fans. Fans expel the inner air to the outside and draws in the fresh air. This system brought about the concept of controlled ventilation and provides healthy living space. It can be used in both residential and commercial spaces. It can resolve damp issues due to proper ventilation, which is useful in protecting the structure of buildings. Proper ventilation is also good for health, it reduces the risks of asthma, allergy and other air pollutant based diseases.

In the winter, the system heats up the fresh air before circulating it into the inner space, by extracting the heat from the outgoing air. This will not only heat up the inner space but also improves the quality of indoor air. In a general scenario MVHRs can recovers up to 90% of wasted heat and improves the indoor air quality by up to 95%.  It works properly in air-tight space with a threshold leakage of ≤ 3m3/h.m2 @ 50 Pa (air leakage /m2 of the building’s envelope). Passive house built homes, as PureHaus build, are 5 times better than this requirement, maximising energy efficiency.

For example, in the winter months, if inside air is 20°C and outside has 0°C temperature then the outgoing air can heat up the incoming air up to 18°C which is almost 90%, there is only 2°C left for the heating system to work on to keep the inner space comfortable. The cost to heat a space is reduced in comparison to a conventional heating system.

Investing in MVHR can lower your heating cost. It will not seem unusual in future as MVHRs will form part of building regulations in the future as the industry recognises its part in lowering the carbon foot print of dwellings. Your home having this kind of system will definitely have higher resale price, the general public are starting to seek solutions to the madness of rising household energy bills. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system is an energy efficient way providing good indoor air quality during the heating season. You can barely notice the running of unit because of the low running sound of the unit. It works differently from the heating and cooling system.

This system can be installed in all spaces of the house no matter for what purpose that space is being used. But be conscious of installing it in a wet space like kitchen space as the installing and working principle is different for kitchen area due to exhaust requirements and food smell. MVHRs are designed to supply air to the living areas of a house while drawing air through the building to the extract points in kitchens, bathrooms and utility areas.

MVHRs run quietly, use the inner air heat which otherwise had no use without this system and it barely needs maintenance as it has just a fan, one moving part, while the filters need just a routine clean to avoid the passage of dust or grease into the ducts. You may need to change the filter time to time, a simple process.

Installing this type of system while constructing the house, makes it less expensive. But if you want to upgrade the indoor quality of your home by building this system later then it will cost more.

The benefits:

  • reducing health problems,
  • proper ventilation,
  • low maintenance cost, and
  • saving energy bills etc.,
  • better comfort

An MVHR is an easy way of improving the quality of life.
